The BA (Hons) in Community and Addiction Studies equips graduates with the skills and competencies required to work in the voluntary sector, as well as with State and non-governmental organisations delivering community development and social inclusion services. Graduates typically pursue careers in community-based initiatives that emphasise inclusive practice, empowerment, and collaboration. Employment opportunities are wide ranging and include national, regional, and local projects addressing addiction, homelessness, unemployment, cultural development, and community sports initiatives. The programme is grounded in the principles of empowerment, human rights, inclusion, and social justice, providing graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to engage meaningfully with communities affected by addiction, support voluntary activity, and advance community projects. The course includes a substantial practical and applied component, enabling the development of real-world skills and workplace competencies. Supervised practical placements in years two and three are a core element of the programme, allowing students to apply academic learning in real-life community settings. There are significant opportunities for professional and career progression within the community, State, and voluntary sectors. Graduates are eligible to work in a wide range of roles, including community development worker or coordinator, community youth worker, policy worker, social researcher or research assistant, and group worker or facilitator. Employment is typically found within organisations such as Family Resource Centres, LEADER companies, An Garda Síochána, the HSE, TUSLA, Section 38 public agencies, and Section 39 voluntary agencies, as defined under the Health Act 2004.
