The BA (Hons) in Social Care Work is a relationship-based programme focused on the purposeful planning and provision of care, protection, psychosocial support, and advocacy for vulnerable individuals and groups experiencing marginalisation, disadvantage, or special needs. The principles of social justice and human rights are central to the practice of social care workers, as defined by the Social Care Workers Registration Board, CORU. As an applied profession, the programme requires students to complete two semesters of professional placement. Social care workers are typically employed in roles supporting individuals with physical or learning difficulties, disabilities, young people at risk, neglected or abused children, families, those experiencing addiction, homelessness, and elderly populations, across residential, day care, and community-based settings. The programme emphasises both professional and personal development to prepare graduates for the challenges of the field. Employment opportunities exist with the HSE, TUSLA, statutory and voluntary organisations, and community-based agencies. The Social Care Work programme welcomes applications from mature students, defined as those aged 23 or older on 1 January preceding entry, who apply via the CAO. Applications are considered individually, taking into account academic qualifications, work and life experience, motivation, and overall potential for success. Shortlisted applicants attend an interview panel, typically held in March, and places are offered to the highest-scoring candidates. Applicants outside the initial offer range may be placed on a waiting list and notified if a place becomes available.
