The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a research-intensive program designed to develop expertise in areas such as power systems, control systems, signal processing, electronics, and communications. Graduates are prepared for advanced roles in academia, research institutions, and the electrical engineering industry.
Program Structure
- Research Focus: The program is entirely research-based, culminating in a doctoral thesis.
- Duration: The standard period of full-time study is 3.5 years (7 semesters), with a maximum allowable period of 8 years (16 semesters).
- Supervision: Candidates are supervised by faculty members, with the possibility of co-supervisors from the industry.
- Coursework: Required courses include:
- Research Methodology (UKEP0010), recommended in the first semester.
- One University Elective Course (U*** ***3).
- Continuous research registration (PKEE **00) each semester until thesis submission.
- Assessment: Progress is evaluated through research progress reports submitted at the end of each semester.
- Thesis Submission: The degree is awarded based on a comprehensive oral examination (viva-voce) of the submitted thesis. Candidates must have published in an indexed journal or presented two papers in indexed conference proceedings at the time of thesis submission.
Entry Requirements
- Master’s Degree: A Master’s degree from UTM or any other institution recognized by the Senate.
- Equivalent Qualifications: Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s degree with relevant experience, subject to Senate approval.
- Fast-Track Option: First-class Bachelor’s degree holders (CGPA ≥ 3.67/4.00) may apply for direct admission to the Ph.D. program, subject to internal assessment.
- English Language Proficiency: International applicants must meet one of the following:
- IELTS: Band 6.0 and above.
- TOEFL (iBT): Score of 60 and above.
- Cambridge English Qualifications: Score of 169 and above.
- PTE Academic: Score of 59 and above.
- MUET: Band 4 and above.
